Alas, I've decided to start another blog. This time, however, I feel optimistic. I feel that I'll actually follow through with this project. The reason? Trajectory. Unlike past blogs I've helped birth either solely or collaboratively, this blog has a purpose. I've found myself in a bit of a creative/intellectual rut in the past few months, and I've decided the only way to jar myself loose of it is to simply work my way out.
This blog will henceforth act as my work station. I plan to use it to post criticism of various medias, genres, ideas, etc... to help stimulate myself back into a creative/productive mindset. As Ezra Pound puts it, "I consider criticism merely a preliminary excitement, a statement of things a writer has to clear up in his own head sometime or other, probably antecedent to writing; of no value unless it come to fruit in the created work later." I want this blog to be my antecedent to writing, so to speak. By writing about the films, books, music, TV shows, and whatever else I'm consuming at the time, I hope to work out my process issues and, hopefully, make something interesting for other people to read as well.
I do want to make it abundantly clear up front that this will not be a review website. While I will be posting about new and old movies, music, and shows, I won't simply be giving them ratings or reasons I like/dislike them. I've grown increasingly less interested in whether or not something is "good" or "bad," but rather what it brings to the table and why it might have succeeded or failed. That's not to say I won't give recommendations or warnings, but the purpose of this blog is to criticize, not review. In that vein, I will also be going back to old standbys like favorite albums, cult movies, classic television, and pulpy novels to reencounter them through a more critical lens. So with all that said, I invite anyone and everyone to follow along as I embark on this new experiment. Maybe you'll get something out of it too.
